On Monday, Senate Democrats blocked a vote that would have advanced a $1.8 trillion coronavirus stimulus package to a full upper chamber vote.
The vote to end ongoing debate over the massive package failed after no Democrats voted in favour. There were 60 votes required and the final numbers were 49-46.
Mitch McConnell, the Majority Leader needed at least 12 Democrat votes in order to get the 60 he needed to allow for a full vote in the senate.
The sweeping bill was blocked on Sunday by Democrats who claimed the package did not provide enough protection for American workers. They called it a slush fund for the GOP.
McConnell called the Democrats an embarrassment for not advancing the package and failing to help fight the coronavirus crisis.
“This has got to stop and today is the day it has to stop,” said McConnell on the Senate floor. “The country is out of time."
“As a result of this procedural obstruction, let me explain where we are. By refusal to allow to take this first step, which would have still given them plenty of time to negotiate, we have put the senate in the following position,”
Many Senators did not vote because they were under quarantine, including Rand Paul and Mitt Romney.
