A 10-year-old girl in Florida is potentially facing second degree murder charges after she shot and killed a woman who had been fighting with her mom.
An argument turned fatal after a 10-year-old girl got a hold of a gun and fired at the woman with whom her mother was fighting.
The child is now potentially facing second degree murder charges for her actions.
According to NBC News, the fight broke out on the evening of May 30 while the victim, 41-year-old Lashun Denise Rodgers, and her boyfriend were grilling in the backyard of their Orlando apartment.
Lakrisha Isaac, the mother of the 10-year-old, is said to have confronted Rodgers over a past dispute, and threw the first punch. Rodgers hit back as Isaac handed a backpack to her daughter.
Inside the backpack was a gun, which the girl then pulled out and fired towards Rodgers, striking her.
According to a police filing, the girl then turned towards Rodgers' boyfriend and said, "She shouldn’t have hit my momma," before pointing the gun at him. He ran for his life and escaped unharmed, however Rodgers died after being taken to hospital.
Isaac was arrested, while her daughter was placed in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families. On Tuesday, however, the child was also arrested and placed in a juvenile facility. She could potentially be charged with second degree murder.
For her part in the incident, Isaac was charged with manslaughter by culpable negligence, aggravated assault with a firearm, negligent storage of a firearm and child neglect.
Florida State Attorney Monique H. Worrell called the shooting "an unimaginable tragedy that defies easy solutions," as police continue their investigation.
