An Italian man has been released from hospital on Thursday having made a full recovery after contracting COVID-19. The man, known only as "Mr. P," is from Rimini, in northeast Italy, and is a whopping 101 years of age.

The man was admitted to hospital last week after testing positive for COVID-19 and left the hospital on Thursday according to CTV News.

Gloria Lisi, the deputy mayor of Rimini called the recovery "truly extraordinary" and has given others "hope for the future."

"Mr P made it. The family brought him home yesterday evening. To teach us that even at 101 years the future is not written," she said.

Survival is in his nature it seems as Mr. P was born in 1919, during the Spanish flu pandemic. Experts estimates that the Spanish flu killed anywhere from 30-50 million people across the world.

According to the Italian Civil Protection Department there are 1,189 registered cases of coronavirus in Rimini, as of Thursday.

Coronavirus is currently present in 197 countries and more than 572,760 cases have been confirmed globally since first reported in December, in China. Italy has been hit with the highest amount of casualties of any other country with 9,134 to date.
