Jennie Stejna, a 103-year-old woman from Easton, Massachusetts recently survived her bout with COVID-19 and decided to celebrate with a beer, according to USA Today.
Her granddaughter, Shelley Gunn, describes her Polish grandmother as someone who has a feisty spirit. In fact, as Gunn told the press, she was the first person to test positive for COVID-19 in her nursing home.
Stejna was suffering from a low grade fever and was relocated to a different ward. Gunn said that there was always staff by her side even when she became very ill.
At one point, Gunn said the family had called Stejna to say what they believed to be their final goodbyes. On the call, Gunn thanked her grandmother for everything she had done for her and at one point, Gunn's husband Adam Gunn asked Stejna if she was ready to go to heaven. Stejna reportedly responded, "Hell yes."
Fortunately for Stejna, she made a full recovery on May 13 and the home notified Shelley and Adam of the good news.
"This feisty old Polish grandmother of ours officially beat the coronavirus," said Adam Gunn. "We’re truly very thankful."
To celebrate her recovery, Stejna drank an ice cold Bud Light, something she'd always enjoyed but not had in a long time, Gunn told the local newspaper.
While the nursing home still has 33 active cases of COVID-19, Stejna was the first to recover.
Stejna has been a resident of Massachusetts for her entire life. She was married to her husband, Teddy, in 1938 and they remained married for 54 years until he died in 1992 at age 82.
Stejna used to love to crochet up until getting arthritis. She was also an avid bingo player and enjoyed reading. Gunn said she has quite a few of blankets knitted by Stejna.
"She used to sit outside and listen to the Red Sox on the radio," said Gunn, saying that her grandmother is a "hardcore Boston sports fan."
Jennie Stejna has two children, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and one ice cold Bud Light.
