108 illegal immigrants released into Texas by border patrol since January have tested positive for coronavirus, Fox News reports.
The illegal immigrants arrived in Brownsville, a city on the border between Texas and Mexico. The number represents over six percent of the total number of illegal immigrants who have received rapid coronavirus tests at the city's main bus terminal.
Rapid testing began at the location on Jan. 25 and is being conducted by a mixture of government agencies and NGOs.
Felipe Romero, a spokesman for the city of Brownsville, also warned that the city has no ability to restrict the movement of the illegal immigrants, and advised that they quarantine after testing positive.
Many of the migrants have said that they intend to travel to states such as Maryland and New Jersey, however. An employee working at the bus terminal has said that they cannot force migrants to show the results of their coronavirus tests before boarding the busses.
Migrants who tested positive for the virus indicated that they were not given any documentation of their positive tests, and were simply told by officials to wait in separate lines at the bus terminal.
