A suspect who shot at least 13 victims is still at large after a shooting in Austin, Texas, early Saturday morning.
The Austin Police Chief painted a chaotic picture in a 4 a.m. press conference after 13 people were shot in a busy entertainment district. Police chief Joseph Chacon said that the suspect in the shooting was still at large and police did not have an accurate description of the shooter, but believed he was male.
New pictures and video show the scene immediately after the shooting with police officers performing first aid and driving victims to nearby hospitals in their cruisers. Chacon said officers were there to provide aid including applying tourniquets and chest seals on gun shot victims.
To date, 11 victims were brought to one local hospital and two to another. Two of the victims were listed in critical conditions as of the 4 a.m. briefing.
The gunfire erupted just before 1:30 a.m. on 6th Street, a popular area filled with bars and restaurants. The street is currently closed to vehicle traffic so that restaurants and bars could expand into the street.
"I cannot say that there is no further public danger at this point because the suspect is not in custody. It appears at this point to be isolated to this one area," Chacon said. "It's not clear at this point what sparked this off, but out of an abundance of caution, we have notified the FBI's joint terrorism task force," Chacon continued.
Liberal newspaper Austin Statesman says it refuses to print the description of the mass shooting suspect for ideological reasons. The at-large suspect is described by authorities as a slim black male with dreadlocks who wore a black shirt.
