The Blaze's Elijah Shaffer spoke with the suspect prior to the incident in a brief interview, in which Rittenhouse identified himself as an EMT who was protecting citizens and protecting private property.
Sheriff David Beth said that of the three people who were shot, one was shot fatally in the head, another fatally in the chest. The third person shot experienced non life-threatening injuries.
Beth told the Journal Sentinel that armed "militias" had been patrolling the city since police shot Jacob Blake days ago.
"They're like a vigilante group," said Beth.
Rittenhouse has been assigned a public defender and will make his first court appearance Friday.
