Two police officers and a service dog were killed Thursday night during a violent standoff with a man who had barricaded himself inside his Floyd County, Kentucky home.
Local news reports that 49 year old Lance Storz started shooting with a rifle at deputies who arrived at his home to serve a warrant for domestic abuse around 5 pm. A five hour standoff ensued that saw six others injured, five cops and an emergency management director who served as a hostage negotiator.
Storz had locked himself inside with his wife and daughter whom he took as hostages.
According to LEX18, Storz almost immediately opened fire when the initial officers arrived at his Main Street home. Two deputies were shot subsequently and called for backup. SWAT, Kentucky State Police, Prestonburg City Police, and the local ATF all arrived on the scene to assist with subduing Storz.
The situated ended at 10pm with his wife and daughter successful rescued and Storz arrested.
According to local WTVQ news, an arrest citation record from the Pike County Detention Center states that he was "charged with two counts of murder of a police officer and one count of murder," plus "five counts of attempted murder of a police officer, and one count of Assault, 1st Degree, on a service animal."
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said on Twitter, "Floyd County and our brave first responders suffered a tragic loss last night. I want to ask all of Kentucky to join me in praying for this community. This is a tough morning for our commonwealth."
Floyd County Sheriff John Hunt said "It's a very dynamic scene," with "A lot of stuff to cipher through and go through."
Sheriff Hunt went on to say he'll be releasing more details later in the day on Friday.
