The Grammy awards had the lowest ratings in the history of the annual ceremony during the 2021 award show this week, The Wrap reports.
The number represents a drop of 10 million viewers since just last year, when 18.8 million people tunes in to watch the music award ceremony. The number is just over half of the previous viewership low, when 16.9 million watched the award ceremony in 2006.
The rating drop was especially prevalent among younger audiences. Among people ages 18-29, this year's Grammys had a rating of only 2.1, compared to 5.4 in 2020.
The collapse in ratings comes as the Grammys become increasingly more political in orientation, with the award show being used to promote a left-wing message of social justice politics, according to Daily Wire.
One performance by the rapper Lil Baby, who has been arrested multiple times for drug possession, featured an anti-police and pro-rioting message.
"When I was growing up, I was taught in American history books that Africa had no history, and neither did I, that I was a savage," Lil Baby said in a voiceover for one of the performances. "I see blue lights I get scared and start running."
The performance also featured a fake Molotov cocktail being thrown at a building, hearkening to the Black Lives Matter riots during the summer of 2020 which caused billions in property damage across the country.
Tamika D. Mallory, a Black Lives Matter activist, also appeared during the show.
"It's a state of emergency. It's been a hell of a year. Hell, for over 400 years. My people, it's time we stand. It's time we demand the freedom that this land promises. President Biden, we demand justice, equity, policy and everything else that freedom encompasses, and to accomplish this, we don't need allies. We need accomplices. It's bigger than black and white. This is not a trend, this is our plight. Until freedom," Mallory said during her performance.
