3 dead, many injured in Philadelphia after mass shooting on South Street

Multiple gunmen fired rounds into a crowd on Philadelphia's popular and busy South Street late Saturday night leaving 3 dead and at least 12 injured. The incident took place near 3rd Street.

Police have recovered two discarded handguns from the scene along with multiple shell casings. Two men and a women were shot several times and died at the hospital.

Surveillance footage of the shooting shows a car pulling into the intersection, then multiple people running.

Hundreds of pedestrians can be seen enjoying South Street nightlife when shots are fired. The area is known for for nightlife and entertainment. Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Max M. Marin writes on twitter, "cell phone footage circulating online, corroborated by myself and colleagues, shows a fistfight that led to gunfire."

A nearby on duty police officer observed the shooting and engaged fire with one of the suspects.

Local news reports that the police officer was "within 10 to 15 yards of the shooter, watching this person shoot into the crowd." The officer returned fire but amidst the melee could not determine if the culprits were struck.

Philadelphia Police Inspector D. F. Pace did confirm that the suspects dropped their guns as they fled.

Local Fox reporter Marcus Espinoza posted a screenshot of the shooting from another surveillance camera. He wrote "you can see where the red circle is someone returning fire after shots initially fired into the crowd from opposite direction. At least two shots returned."

This shooting comes after Philadelphia's DA Larry Krasner has come out in support of social activist measures, such as discontinuing arrests for nonviolent crime.

As The Post Millennial reported, under Krasner, incarceration years have been cut in half, and the length of parole in probation supervision have been slashed by nearly two-thirds.

Philadelphia, along with several other cities such as NYC and Chicago have become mired in a notable uptick in crime, including several notable carjackings in Philadelphia to which the police put out a carjacking survival guide.
