Nearly 60 people in Brampton, Ont. have been issued fines of up to $100,000 as the city continues to crack down on gatherings that have broken COVID-inspired restrictions.

Thus far, 744 tickets have been issued since the start of lockdown. Of those charges, 59 are in the hands of provincial courts, who will decide whether or not they be penalized with the maximum fine.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown has said that his city would be cracking down for illegal meet ups, as the city has been a hotbed of COVID cases. More than half of the 8,427 COVID cases in Peel have come from Brampton, thanks in part to large to these gatherings. One event saw over 200 people.

"I would note that the last 30 days we have not had to issue many tickets as there has been a high degree of compliance," said Mayor Brown on Wednesday, according to the Toronto Star. "When we had the initial fines, it had a chilling effect and it caused people to stop."

The city has the ability to issue $880 fines for failure to comply with lockdown measures, with some fines reaching $100,000 at the discretion of the Justice of Peace, according to The Star.

Ontario currently has seen 45,676 COVID-19 cases, with 40,424 recoveries and 2,825 deaths.
