Despite efforts by Democrats to stop the passage of voter ID laws, a new poll shows that up to 75% of Americans support their implementation with broad demand across the political spectrum.
According to a poll by Rasmussen Reports, a whopping 75% of American support voter ID laws requiring that photo identification be shown before voting, reports Breitbart. This is up from 67% in 2018.
That support comes from 89% of Republicans, as well as 60% of Democrats. 77% of voters who are not affiliated with either major party also support voter ID laws.
These findings come as Democrats pursue federal legislation which would override state laws. H.R. 1, also known as the "For the People Act," seeks to "expand Americans’ access to the ballot box."
H.R.1 considers photo ID a "restriction" on access to voting materials, and would allow voters to use a "sworn written statement" in place of photo ID. According to the study, critics say H.R. 1 "would force states to allow anyone to vote who simply signs a form saying that they are who they claim they are."
If H.R. 1 passes, the voter ID laws currently in place in 36 states would be nullified.
