A nine-year-old girl who was attempting to cross the Rio Grande to arrive at the US-Mexico border has drowned on that journey. The young girl is as yet unidentified, and was found on March 20 on an island on the Mexican side of the river, along with her 3-year-old brother and their mother.
The three were found on the island and were unresponsive when discovered by US Border Patrol agents. While her mother and brother responded to CPR and were revived, the little girl did not make it, reports NBC News.
Customs and Border Patrol released a statement, saying that the marine unit "found the individuals and immediately began administering first aid while transporting the migrants to shore."
"However," the statement went on to say, "despite efforts by the Border Patrol Agents and Eagle Pass Emergency Medical Services, the 9-year-old daughter did not regain consciousness and was later pronounced deceased."
The mother was reported to be Guatemalan, while her children are both Mexican citizens.
Circumstances at the US-Mexico border have been dire since the before the Biden administration came into office, but as immigration has ramped up, with migrants urged on by lax border policies, the crisis has surged.
The Biden administration insists that their border policies are "humanitarian," but great caravans of migrants have been traveling north from Central America, many believing that Bide has issued a direct invitation. Unaccompanied minor children, as well as families, seem to have the greatest chance of being admitted across the border.
