Back in April, George Markow, a 99-year-old WWII veteran who lives in Newmarket, Ontario, set a goal to walk 100 kilometres while raising money for COVID-19 medical research. Yesterday morning, Mr. Markow completed his goal.
Mr. Markow, who uses a walker adorned with miniature Canadian flags, crossed over the 100 kilometre mark and raised $100,000 for the Sunnybrook Research Institute and Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation COVID-19 action fund.
A crowd cheered as he passed over the finish line, media waited patiently to catch a glimpse of the legend's impressive feat.
Mr. Markow's daughter Sylvia says her father is a tough man, he endured horrible conditions as a prisoner of war for three years during the war, but she said he has never complained. She told 680 News, "I cant even put it into words how proud I am of him and his accomplishment." He plans to keep walking to raise more money.
We congratulate and thank Mr. Markow for his accomplishments and we wish him luck in his continued efforts! You can make a donation here.
