New York police investigating a series of stabbings on an A train have finally apprehended the alleged culprit, New York Post reports.
Rigoberto Lopez, 21, has been identified as the so-called "A-train ripper." He is being charged with one count of first degree murder, two counts of second degree murder, and two counts of attempted second degree murder. He was charged after undergoing psychiatric evaluation.
Lopez was arrested on Sunday carrying the knife allegedly used in at least one of the attacks and covered in blood.
The killing spree began on Friday morning, when police found a 67-year-old man who was stabbed on the train. The man survived the attack. Later that evening police found another man, a homeless 57-year-old, dead from a slashing.
Early Saturday morning, a 44-year-old homeless woman was killed on the train and another man was non-fatally slashed shortly afterwards.
New York City, like many major cities across the United States, has seen a large spike in crime, including murder, since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic last year.
