Actress worth $250 million says McConnell will leave 'us' treading water 'as rich sail their yachts'

Actress, musician, and activist Bette Midler said in a tweet on Sunday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who she referred to as "Moscow Mitch," will leave her and her followers "treading water for years, except the rich, sailing by us in their yachts."

Her comments come despite her falling squarely in the category of "the rich," with her net worth estimated to be in the hundreds of millions.

Midler has benefited from a highly lucrative career in Hollywood, starring in blockbuster films such as The Addams Family and Hocus Pocus. She continues to play a prominent role in the Netflix series The Politician, where she portrays the New York governor's chief of staff.

Midler is estimated to have a net worth of $250 million, according to an October report from The Things. Among her various luxuries, Midler owns a 7,000 square foot penthouse apartment in New York City taking up the top three floors of her building. Her lavish penthouse features an outdoor terrace overlooking Central Park, with fourteen rooms, a 70-foot open entertaining space, and a reception gallery tucked inside.

Midler's impressive property holdings do not end in the big apple, however. She and her husband, the comedic performance artist Martin von Haselberg, are known to own several properties in Midler's home state of Hawaii, including a 38-acre property on the northern shores of the island of Kauai. In April of 2020, Midler sold a nearby property on the island for $1.85 million, twelve times more than she paid for it.

While Midler can boast a highly and impressively philanthropic career, having donated large sums of money to organizations such as the Worldwide Orphans Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, and The Mirembe Project, she nevertheless does not fall into the "us" category when "us" is distinguished from "the rich."
