On Saturday, US military personnel found themselves handling an unexpected emergency after an Afghan woman went into labor in mid-flight. The mother and her new baby girl are reported to now be in hospital and both are in good condition after the harrowing ordeal.

According to Fox News, the C-17 Globemaster III was at altitude when the woman went into what was described as a complicated labor. The woman was having trouble breathing, so the pilot immediately made the decision to lower the altitude of the C17 transport plane. This increased the air pressure inside the aircraft, in turn increasing the oxygen.

The pilot requested and made an emergency landing in Germany at Ramstein Air Force Base. A makeshift birthing station was set up in the aircraft's cargo bay. USAF medics from the 86th Medical Group came on board to assist in the baby's delivery.

The US military is now ramping up it's evacuations of Americans and their Afghan allies from Kabul and the rest of Afghanistan, as the chaos continues in the wake of the Taliban takeover of the country.
