Boston Pride has announced that it will dissolve following multiple allegations of racism, and claims that they ignored transgender people.
In a statement, the organization's board, which was made up of only white people, apologized for the lack of intersectionality. They also said more work needed to be done, and that they are making way for new leaders who are more attentive to progressive demands.
"For years, we have volunteered our time with Boston Pride because we care about and are passionate about the LGBTQIA+ community. We strived to foster an environment of diversity and unity within our organization and the community. Over the past 50 years, Boston Pride has facilitated programs and events that have changed our society and promoted equality, but we know there is still work to be done," says the group.
"It is clear to us that our community needs and wants change without the involvement of Boston Pride,” the group said, referencing pushback from far-left “anti-racism” organizations. “We have heard the concerns of the QTBIPOC community and others. We care too much to stand in the way. Therefore, Boston Pride is dissolving. There will be no further events or programming planned, and the board is taking steps to close down the organization."
According the NBC News, the problems with the organizations started in 2015, when "a group of LGBTQ activists of color stopped the city’s Pride parade to issue a series of demands, including more diversity in leadership." It then worsend in 2020 when the BLM movement was on the rise, as the board of directors reportedly took out a reference to Black Lives Matter in a statement that express solidarity with anti-police brutality and anti-racism protestors.
Major problems for the organization began after those incidents, with multiple sponsors pulling out and every major mayoral candidate pulling out of their mayoral candidate forum.
As a result, the organization made the decision to shut down, and another group called "Boston Pride 4 The People" is likely going to take over the organizing of LGBT events in the city.
However, The Daily Wire reports that it isn't clear if Boston will have a pride parade this year. The event was originally rescheduled for October, however it appears to now have been cancelled.
Pride events had been subjected to demands from BLM prior to the George Floyd incident, with many banning police officers from attending in order to make attendees feel "safer".
