Twitter suspended popular conservative Twitter personality @ALX after he posted a meme mocking Joe Biden. It was an action that prompted many of his 80,000 followers to make similar memes in protest.
@ALX devised the original meme through a Joe Biden presidential campaign website that allows users to upload their own photos and accompanying text. The memes created thereafter swiftly went viral as conservative posters shared them to protest the social media company and the Democratic contender for president.
Posting on Twitter, Donald Trump Jr. asked Twitter why it suspended @ALX, who is currently a staffer at the conservative outfit, Turning Point USA.
“Oh yeah, it’s because he posted a hilarious Biden meme saying he might be compromised by China,” wrote Trump Jr. “This censorship MUST END! Demand ALX to be reinstated. Tech tyranny!”
Twitter currently enjoys protections under Section 230 of the US Communications Decency Act that gives it freedom from liability so long as it does not behave like a publisher by editorializing political content. Despite its protections, the platform has been accused of bias against conservatives.
According to Amber Athey, the Washington editor for Spectator USA, Twitter informed her that it suspended @ALX for violating the platform’s rules against “platform manipulation and spam.” The company says that @ALX was ban evading.
@ALX is not the only account to be suspended for ban evasion. Another popular conservative Twitter user, Nick Monroe, was suspended in 2019 for being on a second account made to replace the original after it was suspended in 2014 over mistakes he made as a teenager. “Twitter does not forgive, nor does it forget. But it should,” wrote Monroe for Human Events.
