Two Democrat City Councilmen in Memphis want the Memphis Police Department to deny providing security for former President Donald Trump when he will be speaking in the city on June 18. One of those, JB Smiley Jr., is angling to become Tennessee governor. Trump will be speaking as part of the American Freedom Tour.

American Freedom Tour spokesperson Larry Ward believes the initiative to deny Trump proper security is "mean-spirited, partisan, preposterous and penurious." The resolution, if passed, would be non-binding, indicating that the City Councilmen are working to pass a resolution not for its teeth but for its appearance.

Smiley and Martavius Jones put out a press release announcing their intentions to insist that the Memphis police do not provide security for the event. Their stated reasons are that there is a lack of officers, and that the city cannot afford to expend any for this purpose. The former President will have Secret Service with him, which is customary for all former presidents.

"As we know, the Memphis Police Department is already experiencing a shortage of officers to patrol our communities. I do not believe that it is a prudent use of police manpower and Memphians’ taxpayer dollars to escort the former president to an event in Mississippi," Smiley said, according to local news.

Ward questioned the Councilmen's actions, asking "Would the Memphis City Council withhold security from Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, or Joe Biden? Of course, they would not, as it would be preposterous to do so. And it is outrageous for them to even consider endangering the life of a former President of the United States for the most mean-spirited partisan and penurious political reasons.

"Perhaps," Ward went on to say, "the Memphis City Council should consult with the good members of the Memphis Police Department about withholding security for President Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States. I am not sure they would agree with the Memphis City Council's proposal as protecting presidents is and has always been an unambiguous national security goal."

In fact, the American Freedom Tour, which has featured Trump, members of his family, and conservative notables, has had the support of local police across the country, Ward noted.
