A petition calling Adamson Barbecue owner Adam Skelly a "white privileged anti-masker conspiracy theorist who comes from money" has garnered over 7,000 signatures, in hopes of preventing Skelly from receiving nearly $300,000 raised by a GoFundMe for his legal defense fund.
"If you have been following the news you have most likely heard of this self-righteous bro who owns a bbq joint in Etobicoke that is going against the provincial government’s mandates to protect the people," writes Lindsay Fraser, who launched the petition over the weekend."
"Whether you agree with these mandates or not, he is putting the lives of others at risk and selfishly breaking the law in order to gain fame and attention," she continues.
The GoFundMe for Skelly took off after the 33-year-old was arrested and given $50,000 bail for opening his restaurant for both dine-in and takeout, in direct violation of Toronto and Peel region's lockdown rules.
The operation lasted two days before a locksmith switched the locks for the business, with Skelly being arrested.
The organizer for the pro-Skelly fundraiser says that the petition will continue, telling the Toronto Sun that the campaign is "legal, philanthropic, and both the beneficiary and purpose of the campaign are crystal clear."
The funds raised will go towards Skelly's legal defence, and says it will shut down once $350,000 is raised.
A GoFundMe spokesperson told the Sun that the fundraiser is within their terms of service, saying “It’s important to know that the platform is backed by the GoFundMe Guarantee, which means funds are guaranteed to go to the right place or donors will get a refund.”
