An accused Antifa "ringleader" in Washington, D.C., has been charged for assaulting journalist Jack Posobiec during a Black Lives Matter protest in June.
25-year-old Jason Robert Charter "unlawfully assaulted and threatened" the One America News Network host in a "menacing manner," a DC Superior Court criminal complaint cited.
On June 26, leftist activists gathered in Lincoln Park to topple the Emancipation Memorial, a 144-year-old statue that was fully funded by former slaves and black Union Army veterans to commemorate President Lincoln’s abolition of slavery.
Posobiec was present, filming an elderly black man who appeared to be a historical tour guide for Capital Buddy Tours as he attempted to beseech the mob not to tear down the historical monument. The man was censored several times through physical force. Antifa members then blocked Posobiec documenting the altercation caught on Periscope live stream.
The situation escalated when Charter, a black-clad Antifa insurgent who donned a pair of red ski goggles and bicycle helmet, identified Posobiec and accused him of being a “literal Nazi" and “founding the alt-lite.” Charter then pushed Posobiec in an unproved attack, causing Posobiec to stumble backwards.
The mob drew closer to approach and surround the conservative reporter, swelling in numbers following Charter's calls to evict Posobiec from the park located on federal and publicly-owned land.
Posobiec was flanked by several black men, including the tour guide, to guide him safely away. Then a presumed associate of Charter tried to grab Posobiec’s phone out of his hands as others swarmed to shove him, but were pushed back by a private security agent accompanying media members present at the event. Several of the black bloc militants dumped liquid on Posobiec.
Charter pursued Posobiec en route, prompting a verbal confrontation. The leftist instigator continued to barricade Posobiec from moving forward in any direction. Spotting police presence nearby, Posobiec advanced towards law enforcement, but he was stopped in his tracks again by Charter. At one point, Charter interrogated Posobiec on why he would not return to his vehicle, suggesting that Posobiec did not want his car’s license plates recorded and insinuating that Antifa would dox his current location and place of residence.
When Posobiec finally made his way to authorities with the aid of onlookers, Charter's belligerent behavior bubbled with the police, initiating a fight with an officer when Charter blocked the cruiser that Posobiec left in.
On Twitter, Charter expressed outrage over a police report filed by Posobiec against him, finding it "deplorable" that the DC Metropolitan Police offered Posobiec a free ride to his car. #MPDLovesNeoNazis, Charter signed off.
Tuesday's arraignment resulted in Charter's release under supervised conditions. The case is scheduled for a misdemeanor initial status hearing on March 8 of next year. A pre-trial "stay away" order was filed.
Charter also participated in the destruction of the Albert Pike historical statue on June 20, allegedly seen lighting his cigarette off of the flames that engulfed the site. And on the night of June 22, Charter alongside protesters attempted to destroy a statue of Andrew Jackson in Lafayette Square near the White House. He "was on top of the statue and directing people," a federal official alleged. Charter was taken into custody at his apartment the next month and federally charged with felony destruction of property. President Donald Trump had previously signed an executive order to ensure the protection of American monuments, memorials, and statues. Charter faces a 20-year sentence in prison.
Charter then launched a fundraiser in August. "The [July 2] arrest was carefully orchestrated by the DOJ and the White House to coincide with Trumps Mount Rushmore appearance," the crowdsourcing description reads. "A politically motivated arrest targeting one individual." 78 donations have funded his legal defense to date. Contributions are distributed to DC Counter Repression whose mission is to counter "state repression of activists."
And then at Brandon Straka's #WalkAway permitted rally over the weekend on Washington Monument grounds, Charter was taped among "Freedom Fighters" counter-demonstrators wrestling with assigned U.S. Park Police. Charter has since been accused of misdemeanor assault of a law enforcement officer "without justifiable and excusable cause."
In a criminal affidavit, Charter was observed seizing the upper collar of an officer's tactical vest in a reported attempt to tackle the cop to the ground. Multiple individuals moved to de-arrest Charter. An unmarked bottle of prescription-only narcotics was discovered. Charter was then charged with possession of a controlled substance. On scene, Charter requested medical attention for previous injuries re-aggravated from the incident. An emergency medical technician responded but Charter refused to cooperate. Charter was transported to Georgetown Hospital for further evaluation, then to U.S. Park Police District One for processing, and remanded to DC Central Cell Block until presentment. A source told the Gateway Pundit that Charter “cried his eyes out” while waiting for a wagon to transport him to booking.
Charter pled not guilty at Tuesday's arraignment, resulting in his release to pre-trial services supervision under unnamed conditions. His case is also set for a misdemeanour initial status hearing on March 8 of next year.
It was later revealed that Charter has a verified Tinder account. "I am a poly pansexual leftist activist/organizer," Charter wrote in his profile biography. "I spend my life dedicated to fixing the problems in this country..."
