AOC and Ted Lieu accuse SCOTUS justices of lying during confirmation hearings

On Friday, Reps. Ted Liu and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez penned a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, urging him to investigate Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch.

Liu and AOC argue that the two conservative justices "lied to the American people" about their comments on Roe v. Wade prior to being sworn in sit on the Supreme Court.

The pair released a copy of the aforementioned letter on Twitter, claiming that "the legitimacy of the Court is at stake."

They suggested that while "multiple" Supreme Court justices said things about Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood prior to being sworn in, Kavanaugh and Gorsuch stand out because their comments were made directly to senators.

"We respect the right of individual Justices to have their own views on various constitutional issues," they wrote, "but we cannot have a system where Justices lie about their views in order to get confirmed. That makes a mockery of the confirmation power, and of the separation of powers."

They asked that the Senate "issue a finding–through a resolution or another kind of public statement–on whether these Justices lied under oath to the Senate Judiciary Committee."

Liu and AOC went on to compare statements made by the justices in the June 24 Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision, wherein they described Roe as "egregiously wrong from the start," with those made during their confirmation hearings.

Gorsuch had stated during his hearings that he would have "walked out the door" if former President Trump had asked him to overturn Roe. Kavanaugh called Roe "a precedent of the United States Supreme Court, entitled the respect under principles of stare decisis."

Liu and AOC concluded by calling on the Senate to investigate, and warned of "a mendacious denigration of our fundamental rights and the rule of law" if Gorsuch and Kavanaugh are not called out.
