AOC demands the House 'do away' with the filibuster after SCOTUS rulings

"Catastrophic. A filibuster carveout is not enough. We need to reform or do away with the whole thing, for the sake of the planet."

New York Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday to posted tweet after tweet calling for the end of the filibuster.

AOC's filibuster frenzy included a tweet that read "Catastrophic. A filibuster carveout is not enough. We need to reform or do away with the whole thing, for the sake of the planet."

She also said "find your Senator. If they only say they’re 'open to reform,' that’s not enough. We need a clear position. If their position isn’t abolished or talking filibuster, or if their answer isn’t clear, CALL THEM."

The Congresswoman's institutional ire was spurred by the Supreme Court's June 30 ruling that strongly limited the EPA's ability to regulate carbon emissions, saying that if Congress wanted to enact the kind of far-reaching plans the EPA was taking under the Clean Air Act they needed to pass laws to do so.

In the 6-3 ruling, the court decided that the Clean Air Act did not give the EPA authority to limit emissions through remaking the energy sector and requiring that some fossil fuel companies work toward going out of business, all in favor boosting the sustainable energy sector.

Ocasio-Cortez called the ruling "catastrophic" on Twitter, adding to her recent rhetoric where she called the Supreme Court illegitimate for overturning Roe v Wade. This despite the fact that she and her like-minded colleagues could bring a bill to do exactly what the EPA has just been prohibited from doing.

AOC believes a "judicial coup" is in progress and her imperative over the filibuster is necessary "to check the Court’s gross overreach of power in violating people’s inalienable rights and seizing for itself the powers of Congress and the President."

As the New York Post reports, AOC has "repeatedly pushed for abolishing the filibuster as her party has struggled to pass sweeping legislation through the Senate due to the 60-vote legislative threshold."

In December 2021, she called Senator Joe Manchin, who had upheld the filibuster, "undemocratic" for not voting for the failed "Build Back Better" bill.

AOC again singled out Manchin along with Arizona Senator Sinema in another tweet that read,"Filibuster needs 51, but it’s not just Manchin & Sinema holding out. What to do? CALL YOUR DEM SENATOR + ask them to CLEARLY support an abolished or talking filibuster."

AOC gained some filibuster breaking steam when Joe Biden flip-flopped again on the issue and said it should be ended so the Congress could codify pro-abortion legislation on the federal level.

The Congresswoman response to Biden on Twitter with, "Now we’re talking! Time for people to see a real, forceful push for it. Use the bully pulpit. We need more"

AOC's enthusiasm for Biden's position is a departure from her June 12 remarks where she said "we'll cross that bridge when we get to it" concerning his potential re-election.
