The AP issued a fact-check against claims that the state of California had expanded mail-in balloting as a result of the delta variant of the coronavirus. California, however, bragged about their expansion of mail-in balloting on Twitter.
The AP wrote:
"CLAIM: California is mailing out ballots for the recall election because of the delta variant. AP'S ASSESSMENT: False. The California Legislature passed a bill in February 2021, months before the delta variant surge, requiring that mail-in ballots be sent to all registered voters ahead of an election."
California is headed for a special recall election that could put an end to Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom's reign over the state after enough signatures were gathered by citizens to stage the recall.
At issue for the governor is handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw crushing lockdowns, curfews, and school closures, while Newsom was seen violating his own restrictions. His son attended a camp that did not require masking, and Newsom attended parties at the famed French Laundry restaurant, without social distancing or masking.
California has decided to do mass universal mail-in ballots in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. Critics contend that there are other, underlying reasons for the shift from in-person to mail-in voting.
