Police in Sweden are investigating an incident whereby a man assaulted eight people in the small town of Vetlanda, CTV News reports. Investigators say that terrorism may have been a motive.
"As it is now, we have started a preliminary investigation into attempted murder. That is the criminal classification we have. There are details in the investigation that make us investigate any terrorist motives, but at the moment I cannot go into details," said regional police chief Malena Grann.
The assailant, reportedly a man in his 20s wielding an axe, attacked people at random in the southern Swedish town. The identity of the suspect has not yet been revealed.
Police shot the assailant after arriving at the scene and his resulting condition is unknown. although he has been reportedly taken to hospital. There have been no reports of death as a result of the attack.
"Some are seriously injured and some are slightly injured, but no one is dead," said police spokeswoman Angelica Israelsson Silfver.
Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven condemned the attack as a "terrible act."
