The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) was not adequately prepared to handle the coronavirus pandemic, the federal Auditor General said.
According to The Canadian Press, Auditor General Karen Hogan observed that PHAC allowed Canada's pandemic preparedness to slip in the years leading up to the coronavirus pandemic.
Hogan praised the government's financial response to the pandemic, arguing that it was rolled out smoothly, but that more research is needed to determine whether the money went where it was supposed to go.
Such a proclamation is questionable, however, when one takes into account the Canadian summer jobs program which was supposed to be run by WE Charity, culminating in a scandal which reduced confidence in the Trudeau government.
Hogan also said that coordination across the country was in issue in the pandemic response.
She further called for the creation of an independent review of Canada's coronavirus pandemic response in order to establish better protocols for future national emergencies.
