Dr. Albert de Villiers, 52, was arrested on Tuesday in Kelowna after an investigation into a period of time between 2018 and 2020. de Villiers is alleged to have sexually assaulted a child, Victoria News reports.

de Villiers is also charged with sexual interference with a minor which is defined under the criminal code as touching someone under the age of 16 for a sexual purpose.

de Villiers is a South-African trained doctor who has only worked in BC since 2020 but took the lead when it came to the COVID-19 response in the province.

Before that, de Villiers worked for 16 years as the lead medical officer for Alberta Health Services' north zone, according to his LinkedIn profile.

RCMP in Grande Prairie say the investigation began on May 28 when they received a report of sexual offences against a young child. The sexual assault is alleged to have taken place while de Villiers was working in Alberta.

The spokesperson for Interior Health said they could not comment on the situation but a temporary interim chief medical officer will be appointed on Wednesday and Dr. Sue Pollock will take over the role beginning next week.

According to Alberta RCMP, de Villiers remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing. No details have been released on the suspected victim or what specifically took place.
