A First Nation of around 120 people in British Columbia, that is only boat or float plane accessible, has closed its borders to avoid coming in contact with the novel coronavirus according to CTV News.
Chief Willie Moon, who is on the Dzawad'enuwx First Nation Council, noted that it is a part of his job to preserve the health of the community. The First Nation has many elderly people, a lot of whom are already suffering from health conditions.
The Dzawad'enuwx First Nation is northeast of Vancouver Island at Kingcome Inlet—approximately 290 kilometers from Vancouver.
Moon noted that the council will call the RCMP to escort non-residents—who do not have band authorization—from the community if it has to.
Some First Nations in Manitoba are taking similar measures to protect their communities from the virus.
According to Moon, nobody has been removed from the community at this point and there also have not been any detected cases of coronavirus.
