National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan spoke to concerns about the disastrous withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in a press briefing on Monday, saying that "We are engaging with the Taliban, consulting with the Taliban on every aspect of what's happening in Kabul right now."

Sullivan also said that the US "has no illusions about the Taliban," and doesn't "trust them."

"Does the administration think that they need Taliban agreement to extend beyond August 31?" Sullivan was asked.

"As I said, he responded, we are engaging with the Taliban, consulting with the Taliban on every aspect of what's happening in Kabul right now," Sullivan said.

"On what's happening at the airport, on how we need to ensure that there is facilitated passage to the airport for American citizens, SIV's, third-country nationals and so-forth. We will continue those conversations with them. Ultimately it will be the president's decision on how this proceeds, no one else's."

The US has been withdrawing troops, personnel, and citizens from Afghanistan, but the Taliban overtook the capitol of Kabul last Sunday, and scenes of brutality and incredibly evacuation difficulty have emerged during the ensuing week.
