The Biden administration is releasing a strategy to address what they call the "root causes of migration," as the crisis as the US-Mexico border continues to worsen.
According to the White House, these are the root causes, or what they are calling "five pillars," of illegal migration:
- Pillar I: Addressing economic insecurity and inequality;
- Pillar II: Combating corruption, strengthening democratic governance, and advancing the rule of law;
- Pillar III: Promoting respect for human rights, labor rights, and free press;
- Pillar IV: Countering and preventing violence, extortion, and other crimes perpetrated by criminal gangs, trafficking networks, and other organized criminal organizations; and
- Pillar V: Combating sexual, gender-based, and domestic violence.
"In Central America, the root causes of migration run deep — and migration from the region has a direct impact on the United States," Vice President Kamala Harris wrote about the plan.
"For that reason, our nation must consistently engage with the region to address the hardships that cause people to leave Central America and come to our border."
The Biden plan, which the administration described as "the first of its kind," seeks to bring together the public and private sectors to address illegal immigration in the countries that send the most people to the border, NPR reports.
As migrants stream across the border, nearly 50,000 have been released into the US with no court dates at all between March and July according to Axios.
Migrants have been buoyed by the Biden administration's lax policies of letting in any and all unaccompanied minor children, women who have given birth recently, are pregnant, or are nursing, as well as asylum seekers well before any court date has been made,
"We will build on what works, and we will pivot away from what does not work," Harris wrote.
"It will not be easy, and progress will not be instantaneous, but we are committed to getting it right."
The announcement of the plan does not directly assist the current issue of migrants crossing the border, which began after President Biden stopped the construction of Trump's border wall.
