Jacqui Heinrich of Fox News was met with mockery from President Biden after she asked him about his foreign policy strategy against Russia on Thursday.
The following clip happened as reporters were being ushered from the room during a meeting with the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
"Why are you waiting on Putin to make the first move, sir?" Heinrich shouted from across the room.
Biden chuckled to himself and muttered "what a stupid question" quiet enough that it wasn't picked up by some audio feeds.
Beyond the audible moment, Heinrich says members of Congress are pushing for sanctions against Russia in response to the country’s troop build-up near the Ukraine border. Philip Wegmann of Real Clear Politics adds that its expected Biden will coordinate with Japan about a Ukraine response when he meets with their prime minister on Friday.
Brett Bruen, former President Obama's Director of Global Engagement, agreed with Heinrich about her question's relevancy.
"We continue to allow Putin to set the terms, timeline, & trajectory of this crisis. It's time we stop being so reactive & start creating some of our own conditions," wrote Bruen.
It was during yesterday's press conference that President Biden answered at length about growing tensions between Ukraine and Russia.
"I think what you're gonna see is that Russia will be held accountable if it invades. And it depends on what it does. It's one thing if it's a minor incursion and we end up having to fight about what to do and not do, etc," Biden answered on Wednesday.
The immediate response from others in the White House, like Jen Psaki, was trying to frame Biden’s response as being about "cyberattacks and paramilitary tactics."
On Wednesday morning, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to Biden’s "minor incursion" line.
"We want to remind the great powers that there are no minor incursions and small nations. Just as there are no minor casualties and little grief from the loss of loved ones. I say this as the President of a great power."
The newest dispute over Russia not wanting Ukraine to join the NATO alliance has been going on for several weeks now. Commentators like Jack Posobiec over at Human Events argue that President Biden is seeking to use conflict with Russia over Ukraine in an effort to "restore credibility" for his administration.
