Biden's approval and job performance numbers have been in free fall since April, and appear to be getting worse, according to a fresh NBC News poll, released Sunday. This latest survey, follows the trajectory of other polling data which shows 54 percent of Americans disapprove of job performance, and over 71 percent of Americans surveyed indicating they believe the country is heading in the wrong direction. A breakdown of the polling data is cause for further alarm.
The 71 percent of Americans who agree the country is heading in the wrong direction include a near majority of Democrats (48 percent), and a substantial majority of independents (70 percent) and Republicans (93 percent).
"Democrats face a country whose opinion of President Biden has turned sharply to the negative since April," said Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates, who conducted the survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies.
"The promise of the Biden presidency — knowledge, competence and stability in tough times — have all been called into question," Horwitt added. Biden's numbers are also falling over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and the economy.
On the economy, Americans gave him a 52 percent approval rating in April and a 43 percent disapproval rating. In April, 69 percent approved and 27 percent disapproved of his handling of COVID-19, but the recent poll shows that approval rate has fallen to 51 percent and the disapproval rate has climbed to 47 percent. Since then, it has fallen to 40 percent approval, with 57 percent of Americans disapproving of Biden's handling of the pandemic.
While the generic congressional ballot ahead of the midterms remains virtually unchanged, Republicans have opened up double-digit advantages over Democrats on voter confidence on key issues, like border security (R+27), inflation (R+24), crime (R+22), and the economy (R+18). The Democrats meanwhile, retain double-digit voter confidence leads on climate change (D+24), coronavirus (D+12), and abortion (D+10).
This data comes days ahead of the crucial gubernatorial election in Virginia, seen by analysts as the first and largest test for the Democrat party before the 2022 midterms, and as Biden attempts to wrangle moderates and progressives in his party to pass a much touted spending bill. The poll surveyed 1,000 adults between Oct. 23 - 26. It has a plus/minus 3.1 percentage points margin of error.
Democrats have admitted to playing "hardball" to win the critical race on Nov. 2, calling the debuked tiki torch stunt on Friday an example of "a dirty tactic."
A new poll found on Thursday evening that Republican contender Glenn Youngkin has pulled ahead, with a majority of Virginian parents saying they support the GOP candidate over his Democrat counterpart Terry McAuliffe.
The long-running, liberal Saturday Night Live comedy series finally made fun of Biden in the show's cold open last weekend. The skit's version of White House press secretary Jen Psaki informs the Biden character that nobody watched his exclusive CNN town hall and that his approval rating is plummeting.
"People used to like me," the present-day Biden tells the SNL audience.
