Joe Biden presented the idea, Friday on CNN, of reopening elementary schools safely while also saying elementary schools have the highest risk of disease transmission.
In an interview on CNN including Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, Biden posed the safely reopening of elementary schools. Contradicting himself, he said in the same sentence that elementary schools have the highest risk level for COVID-19 transmission.
"We can safely open those elementary schools where the highest risk of people transmitting the disease,” Biden told CNN's Jake Tapper.
"Number two, we can make it safe for teachers if we invest in what needs to be done. Number one, sanitizing the schools. Number two, making sure that they have ventilation. Number three, making sure there’s smaller pods of children, meaning you need more teachers. You’ve got to pay for this stuff. It was estimated that we could open those schools for somewhere around $100 billion nationwide," he continued.
Biden's claim that elementary schools are at the highest risk for transmissions is contradicted by several studies who's findings seem to indicate that children are not at a high risk for being infected by COVID-19.
One study done in the New York City public school system showed that of over 16,000 students and staff who were tested at random, only 20 staff members and 8 students tested positive for COVID-19.
Dr. Anthony Fauci has recently come out in support of reopening schools, echoing findings that school children are not especially at risk for contracting the virus.
"If you look at the data, the spread among children and from children is not really very big at all, not like one would have suspected,” Fauci explained.
"So, let’s try to get the kids back," he continued.
