As the Biden administration deals with a growing crisis on the southern border, Roberta S. Jacobson announces that she will be leaving her post as Border Coordinator at the end of April.

She stated that she has confidence that Biden's government can handle the crisis, but that "they know it is something that can't happen overnight."

As the New York Times reports, Jacobson's position was only slated to last 100 days in the first place, thus her departure is not unexpected. Nevertheless, it comes at a tense time in border relations.

The administration has been dealing with a surge in migration from Mexico, as well as several other central American countries including Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Jacobson has worked with governments south of the border to try and combat the increasing number of immigrants making their way to the United States.

In early March, when Jacobson tried to translate the administration's message that the border was closed, she mistakenly said "La frontera no esta cerrada" instead, which means "The border is not closed". She corrected herself, however it likely confused many.

According to the Times, after Jacobson leaves, Vice President Kamala Harris will be the chief diplomatic officer in the region, which the administration has hoped will show people that they are "taking the border issue seriously".
