The Department of Homeland Security is set to punish the Border Patrol agents who faced backlash last year after their reins were mistaken for whips as they dealt with Haitian migrants at the border.
While the agents were previously cleared of any criminal wrongdoing, as FOX News reports, they will instead have to deal with "administrative violations."
Sources told the outlet that the DHS will be releasing more details in the coming days, but noted that the agents will be given the opportunity to respond.
The incident in question took place in Del Rio, Texas in September 2021, and garnered criticism from politicians and pundits alike, many of whom saw the images and immediately jumped to the conclusion that "racist" Border Patrol agents were whipping Haitian migrants.
Rep. Maxine Waters even went so far to suggest that what happened that day at the border was "worse than what we witnessed in slavery."
The Biden administration condemned the actions of the agents, with the president himself saying "those people will pay." This without any due process or evidence of wrongdoing.
A couple days later, they announced that it would ban the use of horses at the border in Del Rio to avoid such situations in the future.
Eventually the journalist who captured the now-infamous images, Paul Ratje, came out and set the record straight, declaring that neither he nor his colleagues ever saw anyone get "whipped."
"I didn't ever see them whip anyone with the thing," Ratje said. "He was swinging it, but I didn't see him actually whip someone with it. Those definitely can be misconstrued when you're looking at the picture."
In April, after the agents learned they would not be criminally charged, FOX News' Peter Doocy asked Jen Psaki if the Biden administration would apologize for their false accusations.
Psaki simply referred people to the DHS, offering no apology on behalf of Biden.
