Biden's Department of Justice dropped all charges against nine Stephen Colbert staffers that were arrested last month for illegally entering a congressional building, according to officials.
Staffers from "The Late Show" with Stephen Colbert were arrested by U.S. Capitol police and charged with illegal entry after they entered the Longworth House Office Building, which houses offices for members of the House of Representatives, after hours on June 17, NY Post reports.
The United States Capitol Police said in a statement on Monday, "We respect the decision that office has made," referring to the Washington D.C. U.S. District Attorney's Office, which made the decision not to prosecute the staffers.
Host Stephen Colbert addressed the arrests on his show and explained that is was an unpleasant experience for his employees, according to the outlet.
"The Capitol Police were just doing their job, my staff was just doing their job, everyone was very professional, everyone was very calm," Colbert said. "My staffers were detained, processed and released. A very unpleasant experience for my staff."
Fox News reported that the group entered the building after it shut its doors to visitors, and proceeded to take pictures and videos near the offices of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Rep. Lauren Boebert.
Capitol Police released a statement on the matter:
"On June 16, 2022, at approximately 8:30 p.m., U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) received a call for a disturbance in the Longworth House Office Building," they said, revealing that the members of Colbert's team were "unescorted and without Congressional ID, in a sixth-floor hallway."
"The building was closed to visitors, and these individuals were determined to be a part of a group that had been directed by the USCP to leave the building earlier in the day," the statement continued. "They were charged with Unlawful Entry. This is an active criminal investigation, and may result in additional criminal charges after consultation with the U.S. Attorney."
Following the announcement forgoing prosecution, individuals across social media said that there is a two-tiered system of justice while pointing out the hypocrsiy of charging Trump supporters with illegal entry stemming from the Jan. 6 riot but not Colbert's staffers.
"TWO SYSTEMS OF JUSTICE!" Republican congresswoman Mary Miller said on Twitter.
"This is an attack on the rule of law & demonstrates that the Biden DOJ has become a POLITICAL POLICE FORCE, doling out different punishments for the same crime based on the political beliefs of the defendant!" Miller added.
Judicial Watch's Tom Fitton called the Biden DOJ "corrupt" over their decision not to prosecute.
"The corrupt Biden DOJ refusal to prosecute the Colbert gang further shows the politicized nature of the Jan 6 prosecutions," Fitton said on Twitter.
