US President Joe Biden's approval ratings plummeted in reaction to the Taliban's swift takeover in Afghanistan. Bipartisan criticism highlighted a weak spot in his administration's foreign policy.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted on Monday revealed that only 46 percent of American adults approved of President Biden’s job performance – his lowest on record since his inauguration in January 2020.
The outlook declined from 53 percent as of last Friday, indicating a seven-point drop throughout the weekend.
Rasmussen’s numbers for today showed 45 percent of likely voters approved Biden’s performance, but also that 45 percent strongly disapprove as well.
A separate Ipsos poll specified that "fewer than half of Americans" approved of how Biden handled the situation in Afghanistan overall. Biden's approach is considered the worst compared to the Bush, Obama, or Trump administrations.
A glance at the data showed that the Biden administration has the least "total good" (44 percent) and most "total bad" (42 percent) scores.
The Reuters poll showed a majority agreed that the Afghanistan war would end badly no matter what, and that opinion extended to complete the withdrawal of troops as intended.
Both were themes of President Biden’s speech last night about the situation in Afghanistan. He called the former government too weak to fight and said he stood by the commitment to withdraw from the country.
The speech came off as appalling to at least one veteran interviewed by MSNBC. CNN was not impressed either. Former Obama officials thought Biden’s rushed exit from Afghanistan at the mercy of the Taliban takeover was embarrassing.
Former President Trump said the disaster was enough to demand Biden’s resignation.
At the start of August, President Biden and Vice President Harris saw another steep decline in their approval ratings because of their COVID response and mishandling the border crisis.
