Bloc leader threatens to pursue fall election if Trudeau, Morneau don't step down

Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet said he believes the Trudeau government has lost the authority to lead, going so far as to say an election should be held.

"There is one in two Quebecers who thinks that it is a good idea to go to an election," Blanchet said at his Wednesday press conference.

Blanchet went on to say  that it "is preferable that Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Morneau, who have clearly established that their priorities or their way of managing the 'taxpayers' money were not worthy of the office they hold, should retire. And that is clearly our preference. Now, if we have to go to an election because we have come to the conclusion that it is less worse to go to an election than to leave them there, yes, there are possible physical distancing measures.

"Because if we take the argumentum a contrario, that would mean that as long as there is a pandemic, we live in dictatorship. I don't think anyone would like that. We have an obligation to be ready to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done," as translated from French.

Blanchet said that while he has not yet proposed the election idea to other opposition leaders, it would take the support of just one other leader to spark an election.

The Trudeau Liberals have been heavily criticized by opposition parties after revelations that the governing party had close ties to the WE Charity. The ties between the charity, the Liberals, and the Trudeau family run deep, as it was revealed that nearly $350,000 in speaking fees was paid to members of the Trudeau family.

Trudeau is under an investigation by Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion, in what will likely result in the prime minister's third ethics violation.
