Bloc Quebecois leader says Trudeau is governing like a monarch

Bloc Quebecois leader Yves-Francois Blanchet has attacked Justin Trudeau today, saying that the Liberal government has a lack of respect for Canada's democracy.

"I know Canada is a Monarchy, but I didn't know it had an actual king," said Blanchet in response to the almost total omission of parliamentary scrutiny granted to the government by the NDP.

Going further still, Blanchet was deeply troubled by the lack of fiscal updates that Bill Morneau has provided the Canadian public.

There has not been an economic update since 2019, and Morneau continues to reject calls by opposition parties for a audit, budget update and a fiscal update.

Since the last economic update, the Trudeau government has spent billions of dollars on pandemic relief programs with the national debt expected to reach an eye-watering $1 trillion dollars.

As well as this, Blanchet accused the prime minister of using his coronavirus press conferences cynically, taking advantage of a crisis to cement his own popularity with the Canadian public.

Global News' Ottawa Bureau Chief  Mercedes Stephenson said that Blanchet's statement constitutes the Trudeau government losing the "Bloc Quebecois unless they come up with something for Quebec before this afternoon."

Even without Blanchet's support, Trudeau can continue to govern as they have the support of the NDP. Having said that, the Bloc Quebecois' hostility reveals the fragility of this minority government.

Trudeau responded to the comments at this morning's press conference, saying that it was "somewhat irresponsible" for the Bloc and Conservatives to say we live in a dictatorship every time that the parties didn't get their way.
