A 24-year-old man was shot by police on Tuesday evening in Brampton, causing the Special Investigation Unit to launch an investigation into what happened, according to the Toronto Sun.
The SIU is an agency that is called into investigate reports that involve police where a serious injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault have occurred.
According to the SIU, police were in the York Region investigating an alleged carjacking when, as a result of that inquiry, they attempted to stop a driver in a gas station parking lot around 7:45 p.m.
The gas station was located near Torbram Rd. and Williams Parkway. The altercation led to one officer firing a weapon although they have not specified the reason why at this time. The man inside the vehicle was struck by the gun fire and had to be taken to hospital for surgery.
Two other people have been arrested following the incident. The case has been assigned to four investigators and two forensic investigators. They are reviewing the dashcam footage as well as video from CCTV.
The SIU is asking that anyone with information to contact their unit at 1-800-787-8529.
