Toronto councillors have promised to support Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown's opposition to Quebec's controversial Bill 21.
Brown and the Toronto councillors consider this bill to be discriminatory, according to CTV News. Bill 21 has been in the news as of late, following the suspension of a Quebec school teacher who was suspended from teaching for wearing a headscarf.
Following this news, Brown sent a letter to multiple mayors across Canada urging them to resist Bill 21. It is worth noting that Bill 21 only affects residents of Quebec.
Despite this, Brampton approved $100,000 in spending that would go towards the legal effort to fight Bill 21 in court.
This legal challenge is led by the National Council of Canadian Muslims, the World Sikh Organization of Canada, and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.
Brown wrote in a statement that "as elected leaders, we must never trade foundational principles for electoral purposes that undermine the country at large. Religious freedom is a foundational principle that we must stand up for, and I thank City Council for standing up for what is right."
Toronto Mayor John Tory has also expressed his disapproval of Bill 21. Tory went on to say that he would "look at ways to step up and support the legal fight."
