The suspect is still at large as law enforcement work to provide a description to the public. All that has been released is that it was a "male" with a "firearm."
According to CNN, the shooting took place just after 10 pm PST Saturday, as people inside the popular club, located on the 100 block of Garvey Avenue, were celebrating Chinese Lunar New Year.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's Capt. Andrew Meyer outlined the situation in a press conference early Sunday morning.
"When officers arrived on scene they observed numerous individuals, patrons of the location, pouring out of the location screaming," he said.
"The Monterey Park Fire Department responded to the scene and treated the injured, and pronounced ten of the victims deceased at the scene," he added, noting that an additional ten were transported to local hospitals to have their injuries tended to.
Meyer explained that the suspect fled the scene after committing the heinous act and "remains outstanding." He also stated that it was "too early in the investigation" to determine a potential motive, or whether it was a hate crime.
Monterey Park is predominantly Asian, and Lunar New Year celebrations were taking place across the town. Festivities, which were supposed to carry over into Sunday, have been cancelled.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tweeted that President Biden had been informed of the incident by his Homeland Security Advisor, and would ensure that the FBI provides full support to local authorities.
There was a second incident recorded just north of Monterey Park in Alhambra, and law enforcement are working to determine whether the two are connected.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
