Alberta's Minister of Municipal Affairs Tracy Allard and Premier Kason Kenney's chief of staff Jamie Huckabay have resigned from their positions after taking holiday vacations during the coronavirus pandemic, the Premier announced on social media Monday.
"Millions of Albertans have made real sacrifices over the past 10 months to help keep each other safe," Kenney wrote. "They are right to be angry about people in positions of leadership vacationing outside of the country."
"That is why I have accepted the resignation of Municipal Affairs Minister Tracy Allard and have asked my Chief of Staff Jamie Huckabay to step down, which he has done."
Kenney also announced the demotion of multiple MLAs who took vacations over the holidays, including Parliamentary Secretary for Civil Society Jason Nixon, Jason Stephan of the Treasury Board, and MLAs Tanya Fir, Pat Rehn, and Tany Yao, who sit on other legislative committees.
"By travelling abroad over the holidays, these individuals demonstrated extremely poor judgment," Kenney said. They will remain in the Albertan Legislative Assembly as MLAs, however.
Kenney announced that Ric McIver will become interim Minister of Municipal Affairs while Larry Kaumeyer will serve as interim Chief of Staff.
