Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is reportedly not planning to run against Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for the fellow Democrat's Senate seat in the 2024 election.
"She is not planning to run for Senate in 2024. She is not planning to primary Gillibrand," Ocasio-Cortez spokesperson Lauren Hitt told Politico.
The outlet noted that the Squad member not planning to run is different than declaring that she will not, but "her comment is the most definitive statement to date that a 2024 Senate campaign is not in the cards."
New York Democrats are instead focusing on winning back the four seats they lost to Republicans in the 2022 midterms rather than beating out one of their own.
"I think it’s divisive. And unless you think you can win, it’s divisive unnecessarily," Jay Jacobs, chair of the New York Democratic Party, told Politico. "It’s using up resources we need to preserve for more coordinated work and the rest."
"2024 will be a big year and [New York] will be vital to taking back Congress," a Democratic strategist close to the Working Families Party said. "That will be an important focus for the WFP."
A former staffer of Gillibrand previously stated that her ex-boss would lose in the primary to almost any challenger, including Ocasio-Cortez, due to her being "invisible" and "bored."
