President Joe Biden will be hosting the first press conference of his presidency on March 25, according to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki. The event will be held at the White House.
Biden has been heavily criticized by Republicans for not hosting a press conference since he entered office. It is the longest that the President has gone without hosting a single press conference after entering office in modern US history.
Former President Donald Trump held his first press conference alongside then-UK Prime Minister Theresa May just one week into his presidency, while Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan both held press conferences after nine days. Barack Obama waited 20 days before hosting his first press conference.
After more than 50 days, however, Biden has still not hosted a press conference. The most recent president to wait that long was Calvin Coolidge, who served as President in the mid-late 1920s.
Some Republicans have speculated that the gaffe-prone Biden has been avoiding press conferences in order to avoid ridicule, and that he is hiding behind his aides and press secretary to answer questions for him.
Some Democrats and sympathetic news media outlets have also criticized Biden's lack of press conferences, with many reporters eager to ask the new President questions.
