Hur, a former US attorney in Maryland who currently works in the private sector, will return to government and begin working on the files in the coming days, a senior Justice Department official said.
The announcement comes after the White House Counsel's Office inspected Biden's residences in both Rehoboth Beach and Wilmington, Delaware. Biden reportedly kept a collection of Obama-era classified documents at his UPenn office and his home, besides his Corvette in the garage. The White House says it is fully cooperating with the Justice Department.
Biden was asked by Fox News White House Correspondent Peter Doocy about the location of the documents, to which Biden said that his Corvette is in a "locked garage."
A source familiar with the matter told CNN that the documents are US intelligence briefings and memos related to topics including Ukraine, Iran, and the United Kingdom, and were dated between 2013 and 2016.
Jean-Pierre reiterated comments made by Biden on Tuesday in response to questions, saying the president was "surprised" by the discovery.
When documents were known to be at the home of former President Donald Trump, the FBI raided his Mar-a-Lago residence in August, coordinating with the secret service to do so when Trump was not at home, and under the direction of Biden's Department of Justice.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
