BREAKING: Trudeau Liberals announce list of banned single-use plastics

The Trudeau Liberals have announced a large part of their plan to ban single-use plastic in Canada by 2022, and the plan to achieve zero plastic waste in by 2030. Today, the federal govt published their final science assessment on plastic pollution.

Among the new plastics that will be banned include:
* Grocery checkout bags
* Straws
* Stir sticks
* Six-pack rings
* Plastic cutlery
* Foodwear containers made from hard-to-recycle plastics—particularly polystyrene

Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Jonathan Wilkinson said that the report found plastic causes significant harm to wild life.

"The problem is getting worse. Action is needed to ensure that plastic is kept out of our environment," said Wilkinson.

Wilkinson said that Canadians throw away about three million tonnes of plastic waste every year.

"Nine percent of that plastic is recycled. The rest goes to landfills, or into our environment," said Wilkinson.

According to a report on plastic pollution by Hannah Ritchie and Max Roser of the University of Oxford, Canada ranks among the lowest in the world for mismanaged and total plastic waste.

Figures show that Canadians produce 0.09 kilograms of plastic waste per day per capita—or the 43rd lowest in the world.

According to that same data, the share of plastic "inadequately managed" by Canada sits at 0.00 percent among countries that rank.

In all, 2015 figures show that Canada contributes 0.03 percent of the world's total mismanaged plastic waste. The US, by comparison, accounts for 0.86 percent of the world's share, and China accounts for 27.7 percent.
