Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that his government will move forward with banning imports of Russian crude oil.
The announcement is the latest to be made in a string of press conferences wherein the prime minister has announced new and more punishing measures to sanction Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
"Today, we are announcing our intention to ban all imports of crude oil from Russia, an industry that has benefited President Putin and his oligarchs greatly," Trudeau said. "While Canada has imported very little amounts in recent years, this measure sends a powerful message."
Trudeau also announced that Canada would provide anti-tank weapons systems, and more ammunition. Canada has already made shipments of both lethal and non-lethal equipment.
"It is increasingly clear that Putin made a grave miscalculation," said Trudeau, who noted that the Ruble had crashed and that the Russian stock market had closed. "This unnecessary war must stop now. The costs will only grow steeper, and those responsible will be held accountable."
