The CBC will be laying off more than 60 employees across "multiple divisions," the National Post reported today.
Executive vice-president of CBC English Services Barb Williams told staff via email that 40 media employees will be laid off, with most of the jobs being in Toronto.
In what Williams calls "overall downsizing," an additional 11 people will be let go from the Association of Professionals and Supervisors (APS) which is in Quebec and has at least 19 employees.
Williams said the CBC “operates in a challenging media landscape, a media landscape which is in constant disruption.”
"The impact to the news division, current affairs and local news affected 58 positions, but most were dealt with by retirement and attrition. Nineteen people were laid off," The Post reported on Wednesday afternoon.
Williams' email to staff said that the CBC faces a whopping $21 million deficit each fiscal year, and that the current climate required “adjustments to our business and in turn, those adjustments will have an impact on our workforce.”
The CBC employs over 7,400 people across its divisions, and has received over $1.2 billion in federal government funding, financial statements show.
